Structural Engineering

Specialising in the design of lightweight building structures, the team has experience in a wide variety of innovative and complex buildings, including off-site manufactured and traditionally built structures.

With excellent commercial understanding and technical knowledge of light weight building systems, we are able to select and specify the most appropriate technology for the delivery of major residential, commercial, educational, and hospitality projects.

Working with design teams and manufacturers, we provide DfMA to integrate detailed structural design with fabrication details for production.

We are registered NHBC Light Gauge Steel Frame Certifiers, and act as an Expert Witness for lightweight structures.

Product Design

Increasingly complex design issues require more than a simple step-by-step approach to address the challenges of responsible development. With the team’s background in automotive and off-site sectors, we combine design and engineering knowledge with exceptional planning and organisational skills to provide unique insight in to the challenges of New Product Development.

We manage the evolution of new products from concept generation, through screening, preliminary design, evaluation and design development, to rapid prototyping and design for manufacture.

Throughout the process we aim to optimise product performance – safety, thermal, acoustic, fire, structure, services, for the whole product lifecycle – manufacture, integration, operation and maintenance.

Working across the supply chain, we build on existing core competencies within our Client’s team to develop new products that generate value for their customers and themselves.

Production Process Design

Operations management can be grouped into four broad categories:

Direction of the overall strategy of the operation requires a deep understanding of the processes and their strategic purpose, together with an appreciation of how strategic purpose is translated into reality.

Design of the products, services and processes, with a focus on demand characteristics such as volume, variety, variation, and visibility.

Planning and controlling process delivery from suppliers through the total operation to customers.

Development of process performance by identifying opportunities for streamlining work or reducing waste. This can be formalised through Lean / Agile / Kaizen or Continuous Improvement techniques, delivered through our partners.

Research & Development

critical phase in the journey of new and existing products, R&D is often mistaken for the more singular activity of New Product Development. It is equally applicable when updating, improving or evolving existing products, as it is evolving a concept from drawing board to viable product.

It is a phase that requires expenditure prior to marketing and prior to revenue generation. Leadership, planning, control, evaluation and interpretation skills are therefore fundamentally necessary to facilitate solid and considered decision making, team steering and controlling budgets.

Not all R&D projects are successful. Acceptance of this fact and recognition of the value that a discontinued project will still provide valuable information and learning which in turn may be utilised in future projects. It is far better to fail in development than to fail in production.

HMRC R&D tax credits were introduced to encourage innovation across British industry. We can advise on costs that can be claimed against tax for projects that create new processes, products or services, or which make improvements to existing ones, and overcome technological or systems uncertainty.

Product Certification

Before a product can be sold, installed or exploited, it requires some form of certification which may include: acoustic, air permeability, or fire resistance performance, structural loading capacity, racking resistance, thermal performance testing via accredited test facilities.

The product certification process is an effective mechanism for assessing compliance with regulations and standards addressing safety, quality and other product characteristics.

In general, the independent assessment of a product is the first step towards both industry and customer acceptance. Many products cannot enter the market without independent assessment and confirmation that they meet required standards or guidelines.

We work with some of the major test facilities and leading academic institutions in the UK such as BRE, Exova, BTC Saint Gobain, Oxford Brookes University, and the University of Surrey. Commissioning tests can contribute to overall certification of products to standards such as NHBC and BOPAS.

Project Management

We provide high level strategic leadership as well as technical management, planning and organisational skills, to programme and deliver the sequence of activities required to ensure design, procurement, manufacture, delivery and installation on time in full (OTIF).

Our experience in the automotive, construction and off-site sectors, gives us a unique understanding of manufacturing imperatives such as quality, service, inventory, safety, and their strategic value.

We understand the risks particular to off-site manufacturing (in addition to normal construction risk), including safety, funding, process and programming, cost/value/productivity, skills & knowledge, quality, regulatory, industry and market culture, logistics and site operations.
